PSA: How to Vote in the Illinois Primary (March 17)

The Illinois primary takes place on March 17, during the U of Illinois spring break. Illinois  has an open primary, meaning you don’t have to be registered a political party in order to vote.

Pollsters, pundits, and politicians all make assumptions about what American college students will do in the voting booth (including not showing up at all). If you are eligible to vote in the US, the only way to make your vote say what you mean is to cast it.

If you have registered to vote here in Champaign County, then you have to vote here. Your local registration automatically cancelled any prior registration you had. If you have never registered to vote, you are eligible as a student to vote here, but you have to register. If you’re registered elsewhere and wondering whether to change your registration, here’s  a post on the question, should college students vote at home or at college?

Here’s a link to register in Champaign County (if you choose to register here where you go to college). Grace Period Registration started on February 19 and continues through election day (March 17). That means you can register to vote AND cast a vote at the same time. Note that you need ID and something with your local address on it in order to register.

Early voting will be available, so you can vote locally even if you’re going to be somewhere else over Spring Break. Just note that if you are a first-time voter, you will need to bring some form of ID.
